Residential & Commercial Garage Doors
What measurements to look at before purchasing a new garage door:
Step #1
To determine the size of the door needed, all you have to do is to measure the opening and the door should be the same size. Make sure the door frames are squared. If they are not, make the correction, or adjust the door size to cover the whole opening.
1(lWidth)=_______________ 2(Height)= _______________
Step #2
You need a minimum of 3 inches on each side of the door for the installation of the vertical tracks. Again make sure you have this space available, or you will have to narrow the opening, and the door. 3=_______________ 4=_______________
Step #3
Headroom is the distance between the top of the door opening (jamb header) and the ceiling or floor joists. You need 8 ½ in. for a standard lift extension spring hardware, or 12 inches for a torsion spring system, PLUS 2 inches for the installation of an electric door opener if required. Special low headroom hardwares are available for limited headroom. Contact a professional for more information. 5._______________
Step #4
Backroom is calculated from the distance between the front wall to the back wall of the garage. You need a backroom equal to the door height +26 inches. The installation of an electric door opener will require a backroom equal to the door height + 43 inches. 6._______________
Step #5
An entry door on a side wall of the garage, with or without steps to the house, may provoke a situation where the entrydoor will hit the horizontal tracks of the garage, or a person will hit the track with his head. Be aware of this possibility, and should this problem occurs, contact a professional to get suggestions to handle it.
